One of our "faithful readers" requested we post a list of the 64 rules so he could better anticipate what is to come! Instead of typing out all 64 rules I have included a sidebar section that I will attempt to keep updated with the next few rules. This will allow people to better follow along and even prepare if they too are attempting to join us in this experiment! Hope this is helpful!

Who knew...?
Food...what is it? Seems like a simple question doesn't it? The most general definition I can think of is anything that is edible, but that includes things like my girlfriend's favorite candy...Twizzlers. We can all assume that Twizzlers ARE NOT food. So we'll need a better definition.
Wikipedia states, "Food is any substance, composed of carbohydrates, water, fats and/or proteins, that is either eaten or drunk by any animal, including humans, for nutrition or pleasure." Ok so you could put carbs, fat, and proteins in a pill and eat it for "nutrition" and according to this definition it would be called "food". WHAT?!? I checked other online sources and they all pretty much say the same thing, so that does us no good.
Looking at this from another angle we'll want a rule that is general enough that it will cover all the "foods" we will come across during the week and allow us to use some common sense when we ask the question: "Is this food?" Stay tuned for our post on Sunday for the official kickoff of the Great Food Experiment and our inititial definition of food. Thank you everyone for your support, we are very appreciative.

Preparation: Eat a Bunch of Junk Week?
This week we are devoting to cleaning out our fridge, freezer, and pantry (mostly by eating all of the things we think we will no longer be able to eat during this experiment). Ryan's hardship=frozen egg roles. My weakness will be giving up english muffins in the morning. At Freddy's today I checked to see if any other brand of english muffins were without ingredients I could not pronounce (our current standard of acceptable food until we can figure out what food really is).....NO such luck.....english muffins will most likely be on the no-no list. At least until we go to some expensive health food conscious store like Whole Foods. Until then I shall eat oats for breakfast.
It seems wrong to throw away all of our junky food. But it also seems wrong to gorge on it all for a week. And wrong to give it away to make other people unhealthy. Maybe use it for compost to grow some healthy food?
Along with cleaning out our current food storage we are trying to solve the question of what is food? As the first rule is so vague: Eat food. In the store today our conversation went something like this, "Is sausage food?" "They sell it as food, but then how about twizzlers" "Definitely not twizzlers." "Yogurt?" "Probably not the kind of yogurt we have costco-stocked our fridge with." "How about fast-food?" "Well maybe subway but definitely not Taco Bell." As you can get the gist, we cannot spend our first week debating everything we put in our mouth. We must come up with some clean-cut fool proof way to distinguish between food and unfood. Any and all ideas welcome!

The Beginning
The Experiment
1. Each week we will add and strictly follow one of Michael Pollan's Food Rules until we have attempted all 64 rules.
2. At the end of the week we will share our experience (with possible updates during the week).
3. After the week we will evaluate the rule and either discard or continue following (possibly not as strictly).
Goals
1. Critically evaluate, reflect, and challenge our dietary choices.
2. Inspire others to consider their dietary choices.
We decided to share this experiment with everyone via blog in order to add pressure on ourselves to make it through all 64 rules. If you are so inclined to attempt this experiment with us, we would love for you to also share your experiences with the rules in the comment section. We hope this blog will be thought-provoking, comical, insightful and overall entertaining. Ryan says we do not need that many adjectives, but I have high hopes for this blog.
The start date of this experiment is April 5th, 2010. Get ready!
To give you a sneak peak...Rule #1: Eat food. (Our interpretation coming...)
