I said previously that we were not too sure what was going to happen with this food rule. The concept is simple: When you cook veggies in water the water becomes filled with good nutrients, so if you drink the water then you will become filled with good nutrients too! If you throw out the water then you are wasting some potentially good vitamins.
Ryan cooked brocolli earlier in the week and when we looked at the green water left in the pot I wanted to gag. Then I spotted some dirt in the water! "Ryan, did you wash the broccoli before you cooked it?" "No." "Why not!?!?!" "What does it matter, it's organic and you don't actually see any dirt!?" Ugggghhhhhhhhhh. Needless to say, the water was flused down the drain. Fail.
The spinach conversation went something like this:
"I don't get it...Do people actually cook spinach in water?"
"I'm not sure. Do we actually have to drink spinach water?"
"Yes! But I still don't get it....why would people cook spinach in water? That sounds so disguisting."
"Drinking spinach water sounds even more disguisting."
"Maybe we need to talk to someone about this."
Any ideas????
I looked on the internet and they suggest using spinach water for soup bases. I also saw a suggestion of saving spinach water to cook pasta in. I think we are also going to have to drink some spinach water plain, just because we are doing a great food experiment.

Try making a green-monster smoothie. Technically you'd be drinking spinach... also, I buy frozen spinach and cook it in a bit of water. I drain it and press the water out, then add cream cheese salt pepper etc. Never kept the water tho.
ReplyDeleteAfter cooking spinach all week I just assumed you meant to add cooked spinach to the smoothie....which does not sound very appetizing (I'm thinking slim!). My friend said she uses raw spinach though so I am guessing that is what you mean. I will need to try this after I buy some more spinach. After this week's rule I am all out!
ReplyDeleteI realize that this thread is quite old, but I just stumbled upon it. I steam spinach... in water, of course. Even after just steaming spinach in a bit of water, the water turns green: spinach water. Believe it or not, I add a little salt to it and drink it. It's especially tasty warm, but it's even tasty at room temperature.
ReplyDeleteI also drink spinach water...after boiling it. I love it. It reminds me of the taste of green tea. Lots of nutrients too.
ReplyDeleteI am doing a liquid fast today. When I was cooking supper for my husband, everything looked so good. I wanted a bite of the spinach so bad. I poured the water it was steamed in into a coffee cup, added a dash of pink salt, and drank it. Delicious.
ReplyDeleteI just boil spinach in water, eat the spinach, then drink the broth like a tea and I loooove it!
ReplyDeleteYes, a lot of asian cultures do this where they boil up veggies to make a drink. Just drink it as is. Westerns think it's weird or gross but keep in mind that easternsare turned off by cheese
